The first step in the 6-step process of E+R=O is Pause.

Purpose of the Pause
Mistakes happen because we go too fast (autopilot, impulsive, habits).

The purpose of the pause is to get us to slow down internally, not necessarily externally.

Being able to pause is a Skill.

In a split second, you need to be able to:

  1. Bring a ton of skill.
  2. Slow down the impulse.
  3. Cycle through E+R=O.
  4. Engage in a disciplined response.

How long do you need to pause?
As long as it takes to have a disciplined response.

Default response will bring default outcome.

3 Pause Points

  1. Before the Event (Before you walk in, before practice, teaching).
  2. Between the Event & Response (Most frequent opportunity to pause).
  3. After the Outcome (Evaluative pause, after the situation, how did I do).

What I have noticed since intentionally implementing a PAUSE:
Better outcomes to everyday situations. Better relationships with others (wife, kids, friends, etc.). Less anger and spur-of-the-moment negative comments to others. It has allowed me to think, “What is best for this situation, and what do I wish to gain from this experience?” Pausing and not just responding with the first thing that comes to mind (normally not good) has been life-changing. I wish I had known about this before 2016.
