THE QUESTION – HOW CAN I GET BETTER TODAY
The answer – Make a Difference. (Step 5 in the R Factor, if you’re following along)
Your Response is an Event for others. Sports/Businesses are built on relationships: you to players/employees, player/employee to player/employee, etc. How you manage your R is an E for others and creates outcomes for others. The more value and better experiences one has will lead to more exceptional outcomes.
- Value low and experiences bad = Forgettable
- Value moderate and experience good = Interesting
- Value a lot and experiences great = Exceptional
Give an exceptional experience. How you lead, interact, and engage matters. You choose whether it’s forgettable, interesting, or exceptional—the same can be said about the negative side.
1st Element – Complete Ownership
Take complete ownership for your R and how it creates O’s and experiences that other people deal with. Take ownership of your attitude, actions, and words. You control these things. Take ownership of the impact these have. If your players/employees are not getting it, change!
Take ownership of yourself and the impact you have on others!
2nd Element – Careful Observation
Caring, finding out what is important to other people and making it important to you in a way they can feel it. We tend to be selfish. You have to care to be able to observe. Caring is a choice and an action.
We may not feel like it, but to make a difference, we must care in a way they can feel.
3rd Element – Genuine Understanding
Demonstrate understanding and let them know you get it. As a coach/leader, you need to understand the what and why of your people. They have a voice. Human beings communicate, and your athletes/employees want to be heard.
Demonstrate understanding and listen. Too many people listen to respond and not understand. Reasons why you are not listening:
- You’re pre-preplanning what you will say
- You’re thinking about something entirely different
- You’re running a social commentary to yourself about the person and what they are saying.
Normally, we are selfish and think about ourselves. Focus on listening and mental discipline.
4th Element – Helpful Contribution
My R is an E for them (my players/employees). You will contribute E’s and O’s. Pay attention to how you add value. Make a difference for all involved. When you contribute, be intentional, purposeful, and skillful. Contribute things that other people will think are valuable.
Secret to Making a Difference:
SERVE OTHERS!!!!
