How Can I Get Better Today?

The answer – Build Skill. (6th and final step in the R Factor Process)

There are 4 levels of skill (all responses are skills). They are all skills that you can practice, teach, train, learn, and develop. This focus is on you and your skill. Do not worry about others 20 sq. ft. worry about yours. What is your skill level? 1) Beginning 2) Basic 3) Automatic

4) Exceptional – Elite top performers. We are all at various levels with our various skills. Talent and experience leads to automatic response. Experience builds habits, not exceptional skills. Talent and experience combined can get you trapped in automatic. To go from automatic to exceptional you have to intentionally grow your skill.

Discipline Driven Practice and Mindset

To get from automatic to exceptional will take 4 things: 1) Mindset 2) Systems & Mechanics 3) Repetitions & Reflection 4) Feedback & Accountability.

Mindset – focus, self-talk, feelings, action.

People who build exceptional skill focus on learning and being excited about it. Many coaches/leaders are terrified of new stuff, behaviorally speaking. First thing to address is mindset, we need to feel good about building new skills!

System & Mechanics – mechanics is what we use to run our systems. What is the system? How do I execute the mechanics? Skills – Listening, Discipline, Mindset, Mental Toughness. What skills do I need to get better at? Caring, patience, empathy, listening, etc. Find those who have devoted their life to teaching the systems & mechanics.

Are you trying to learn them? Coaches/Leaders in general: Average – have quotes, Good – have plans, Elite – have systems.

Repetition & Reflection

Now we must execute the skill, practice and then reflect. Rep, rep, rep, get feedback. Athletic/Job Skills can come easy but personal skills can be hard. Need to grow in behavioral skills. Disciplined reps (everyday life provides us a chance to practice) daily. Everything is a rep, every response is testing yourself, discipline/default etc. Then reflect on the impact your R had on others. Feedback & Accountability

We are talking about behavioral skills. Feedback and accountability is critical to the skill building process. How others see us is important, getting feedback from outside is tough to do. E+R=O, the outcome is feedback and accountability to your response. Take ownership of your Response. Need a truth teller in your life. Get one! R factor is a whole system for managing and owning your behavior and 20 sq. feet of your team/business.

Discipline driven practice is crucial. It is all about action, behavior and your skill. John Perry
