How Can I Get 1% Better Today?

The Answer: Be Extreme

Olympic swimmer Rowdy Gaines didn’t start swimming until he was 17 years old.

Let that sink in.

Despite the late start, he went on to win three gold medals at the 1984 Olympics and set 11 world records over his career.

Because the United States boycotted the 1980 Olympics, Rowdy spent eight years preparing for his Olympic moment. Eight years. For races that lasted less than one minute.

Over that span, he swam an estimated 20,000 miles to prepare for a 49-second race.

That’s extreme. Rowdy once said “I swam around the world for a race that lasted 49 seconds.”

Here’s the lesson:

Excellence doesn’t come from convenience.
It comes from commitment.

Rowdy didn’t dabble.
He didn’t go halfway.
He didn’t wait until conditions were perfect.

He went all in.

Be Extreme.

If you’re going to do something—
do it with intention.
do it with discipline.
do it with everything you’ve got.

You don’t have to be extreme at everything.
But the things that matter most?
Those deserve your best effort, your best focus, and your best consistency.

Small moments don’t require extreme preparation.
Great moments do.

1% Better Challenge

Ask yourself:

  • Where am I showing up casually when I should be showing up committed?
  • What deserves a little more focus, effort, or intentionality from me right now?
  • If I went “all in” on one thing this season, what should it be?

Pick one area this week and turn the dial up just a notch.

Not perfect.
Not obsessed.
Just intentional.

Because the difference between good and great is often found in how extreme you’re willing to be when no one is watching.

Be extreme—on the things that matter.
