How Do I Get 1% Better Today?

The Answer: Follow Brian Kight

Walking into a football coaches clinic in February of 2018, I had no idea I was about to encounter a topic—and a person—that would impact every area of my life.

The topic was leadership.
The speaker was Brian Kight.

These are some of the very first notes I wrote down that day—and they’ve guided how I coach, lead, and live ever since.

The 2 Responsibilities of a Coach (Leader)

  1. Build Trust
  2. Achieve Results

The 3 Roles of a Coach (Leader)

  1. Solve Problems
  2. Achieve Goals
  3. Improve Relationships

The Real Job of a Head Coach (Leader)

  • Remove obstacles
  • Make people better
  • Check your ego at the door

Simple. Hard. Powerful.

The 5 Questions Everyone Wants Answered

  1. Where are we?
  2. Where are we going?
  3. How are we going to get there?
  4. What is my role?
  5. How are we doing?

These questions must be answered at three levels:

  • Individual
  • Position Group / Department
  • Team / Organization

When leaders consistently answer these questions with clarity and honesty, trust grows—and performance follows.
